Religious Speech in Public Schools
Issue: Religious Speech in Public Schools
Problem
The topic of the so-called “separation of church and state” has become a hot issue across the American landscape. Countless times daily, public school administrators refuse to allow Johnny to pray with his friends over their lunch, or Susie to hand out candy cane pens with religious messages to classmates, or Janie to talk about Christianity in the schoolhouse.
Solution
Know your rights about religious speech and prayer in public schools and be prepared to defend those rights or risk losing them forever.
Liberty Legal Institute, a non-profit legal organization, has published an excellent article, “Religious Speech and Equal Access in Public Schools,” by Hiram S. Sasser, III. This is an excellent source for understanding our Constitutional rights.
Conservatives today lament that prayer has been banned completely from the school house. Yet with a new wave of court cases across the nation, Americans are gaining ground in the protection of our religious speech.
The article by Sasser “….is meant to highlight some of the key issues that are currently being debated and litigated around the country.” His topics include the following:
- Prayer in the Schools
- Distribution of Literature
- Equal Access to School Facilities
- Dress Code
